Night and the City is a 1996 duo album recorded by the U.S. jazz bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Kenny Barron.

The album

The album was recorded live in the small New York club The Iridium. Except for occasional clatter of cutlery and the applause of the guests the album long stretches of live character is not noted. Haden and Barron play mostly ballads. Waltz for Ruth is a composition by Charlie Haden for his wife, Ruth Cameron.

The album is a continuation of the collaboration between Barron and Haden, had already successfully with Roy Haynes nominated for the Grammy Album Wanton Spirit started in the year before.

Reception

Night and the City in 1999, nominated for a Grammy in the " Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group".

The Los Angeles Times wrote: Haden supported Barron with his well-known, native sound by listening intensively the piano lines and responded to any sudden shift in musical direction with its own countervailing development .... The audience in the packed jazz club cost every moment of, listened attentively and responded enthusiastically to any particularly enticing musical moment.

Down Beat ( 5/98 ), page 62, awarded 4 out of 5 stars for the album and wrote: ... the well- selected songs suggest a romantic evening frame, reinforced by the friendly clink of glasses and cutlery. Barron Haden and consistently communicate as equal partners ..
