Nightjar

Caprimulgus macrurus

  • Falk nightjars ( Chordeilinae )
  • Caprimulginae

The Nightjar ( Caprimulgidae ) are a family of birds from the order of Schwalm -like ( Caprimulgiformes ). They are related relatively closely with the sailors ( Apodidae ) and hummingbirds ( Trochilidae ). In contrast, a close relationship with several other, similar in appearance and lifestyle families, such as the fat Schwalmen ( Steatornithidae ) and the owls Schwalmen ( Podargidae ), not well secured.

The family includes about 90 species in 15 genera and is, distributed with the exception of the polar regions of the world. The Nightjar ( Caprimulgus europaeus ) and the Rothals - nightjar (C. ruficollis ) are the only breed in Europe representative of the family. The North American Nachtfalke ( Chordeiles minor) is found to be rare Irrgast in Western Europe and the Azores.

Almost all representatives of the nightjars are crepuscular and nocturnal flying insect hunters. Thus, they share the same ecological niche with the bats.

Excess inventory and threat status of the various species, mainly tropical, little is known. It is believed, however, that the Little Jamaica Nightjar ( Siphonorhis americanus), from over a hundred years the evidence is missing, is already extinct. The Puerto Rican Nightjar ( Caprimulgus nocterus ), which was considered extinct, was rediscovered in a small population in the 80 years and is considered high risk. Also unclear is the stock of Vaurie Nightjar ( Caprimulgus centralasicus ), the Prigogine - nightjar ( Caprimulgus prigoginei ) and the Nechisar Nightjar ( Caprimulgus so-so ).
