Nihat Erim

Ismail Nihat Erim (* 1912 in Kandıra; † July 19, 1980 in Istanbul) was a Turkish, appointed by the military junta Prime Minister.

Erim made ​​his Abitur at Galatasaray High School. He graduated in law at the University of Istanbul. His doctoral thesis in law he wrote in Paris. In 1939 he became docent and taught constitutional law at the University of Ankara. In 1941 he was appointed full professor. From 1945-1950 he was a member of the Turkish National Assembly for the CHP. After 1946, Erim Minister and later Deputy Prime Minister. After 1950 he was chief editor of the party newspaper Ulus. From 1953-1955 he edited the newspaper Yeni Ulus and the Halkçı Gazetesi. In 1961 he returned to the Parliament and was named after the military coup of 1971 Prime Minister. For this he had to withdraw from the CHP. His two governments lasted about one and a half years. This period marks the beginning of a crisis-ridden era in the history of Turkey, which should last a long time. Until 1977 he was a member of the Senate.

Nihat Erim was shot on July 19, 1980 in Istanbul by members of Devrimci Sol.
