Nik Bärtsch

Nik Bärtsch ( born August 3, 1971 in Zurich ) is a Swiss pianist and composer of crossover jazz.

Life and work

Bärtsch received from the age of eight lessons in jazz piano and drums. His musical studies at the Zurich University of the Arts, he finished in 1997 but with a classic piano diploma. Subsequently, he studied from 1998 to 2001 at the University of Zurich philosophy, linguistics and musicology. Since 1993 he has worked with Daniel and Philip Mouthon Schaufelbergerstrasse, since 1994 with the New Music Ensemble Zurich together. In 1997 he went with Harald Haerter on tour. In the same year he founded the Ensemble Mobile with Mats Eser, Kaspar Rast, Don Li and guests.

From 2000 to 2003 Bärtsch had a lectureship in practical aesthetics at the Musikhochschule Winterthur Zurich (since 2007 Zurich University of the Arts [ ZHdK ] ) holds.

2001 Bärtsch went with a solo project on tour; since the same year he plays in his " Zen-funk quartet " Ronin ( with Kaspar Rast, Björn Meyer and Andi Pupato ), which was then expanded to a quintet with Sha and with whom he said at numerous international festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival and JazzFest Berlin occurred. The music of Ronin Bärtsch referred to as " Ritual Groove Music".

Nik Bärtsch Ensemble Mobile ( since 1997 with Kaspar Rast, Mats Eser and Sha ) developed overall musical works of art in ritual contexts. The performance of the music is usually associated with a multi-media room design. The three-year (2000-2002) Blue ongoing trilogy combined into three 36 each hour-long live concert music, space, light, video, and swordsmanship.

Despite the multiplicity of influences, this music always possesses a signature style. They incorporate elements from different musical worlds, be they in - from funk to new classical sounds of the Japanese ritual music - not provided, but these forms are post-modern side by side or quoted, but merge into a new style. The result is, these sounds and rhythms are highly idiosyncratic music, composed of a few phrases and motifs that are always new and varied combined and superimposed.

At times, Nik Bärtsch also played at the Gershwin Piano Quartet. He has also written for different platforms theater music. Bärtsch 2009 was co-founder of Music Clubs exile in Zurich. He lives in Zurich and Berlin.

Prizes and awards

At the European Jazz Competition, the Leverkusen Jazz Days 1995 Bärtsch came with the band groove of cooperative Menico Ferrari finals. 1999 and 2002 he received the promotion price of UBS Cultural Foundation. He was promoted to the work year, the City of Zurich in 2002. In 2004 he received the Culture Prize of the town of zollikon ( recognition rate ). In 2007 he received a commission of per Helvetia for a music and dance program with Hideto Heshiki. Bärtsch was supported at the same time as part of the priorities in question Jazz 2007-2009 promoting pro Helvetia.
