Nikkaluokta

Nikkaluokta ( Samish Bay for the Nile ) is a village in northern Sweden. It is inhabited mainly by seed and belongs to the province of Norrbotten County and the greater community Gällivare. Nikkaluokta located on the top bay of the lake Paittasjärvi. The town of Kiruna is located nearly 70 km from the bay. The small town is located east of the highest mountain range in Sweden, whose highest peak is the southern tip of Kebnekaise.

Nikkaluokta is often taken as the starting point for walks around the Kebnekaise, or even to King's Trail. Walking distance to the Kebnekaise mountain station is 19 kilometers and can be reached in 4-5 hours. Helicopter transport are also possible (6 min. ).

The reindeer herders and eponym Nils Olsson Sarri came in 1910 with his wife of Norway through the Vistastal and founded the place. Sarri then became the first Sami mountain guide local celebrity. His son Lasse led to the same profession until the eighth decade of life, and thus became the oldest mountain guide Sweden. But it was only in 1971 a road from Kiruna was built to Nikkaluokta. Even today, the entire town is dominated by the family Sarri.

Today there all year, only 22 people live. The village consists of a few scattered wooden houses. The "Center " is guided from the seed family Sarri mountain station with an attached restaurant and grocery store. Around it are grouped about a dozen simple wooden huts for finding overnight hikers. Some of the cabins are very modern and have electricity and sanitation. However, the tourist has the opportunity to stay in a traditional Kote ( turf hut ).
