Nikola Karabatić

Nikola Karabatic (* April 11, 1984 in Niš, Yugoslavia ) is a French handball player. He plays on the left back position in the French national handball team. He currently plays for Spanish club FC Barcelona. He was elected World Handball Player in 2007.

Career

Association

As a four -year-old left Karabatic, son of a Serbian mother and a Croatian father of Vrsin in Trogir, the former Yugoslavia, as his father Branko Karabatic got (former goalkeeper of the Yugoslav national team) in France a contract as a professional handball player. Even as a 17 -year-old played Karabatic at Montpellier HB in the first French league and a year later in the French national team. With Montpellier he won the Champions League in 2003.

In 2005 he moved to Kiel, where Karabatic established itself in the course of his first season as one of the major key players, which is why the fans voted him also to THW - player of the season 2005/ 06. Of the Kieler Nachrichten him the award Kiel Sportsman of the Year was awarded in 2006. 2007 won Karabatic with the THW Kiel Triple ( Champions League, Championship and DHB - Pokal).

End of the season 2008/ 09 Karabatic left the THW Kiel. Together with his colleague Vid Kavtičnik he spent 1.5 million Euro transfer fee to Montpellier HB. Both had with the THW valid contracts until 2012. In February 2013 he moved to the Pays d' Aix UC. Since the summer of 2013 he runs on for FC Barcelona.

National

Karabatic won his first cap for France on 2 November 2002 at the World Cup against Russia. With the national team he won the 2006 European Championship in Switzerland and was fourth at the 2007 World Championships in Germany. In the 2007 World Cup, he was elected to the Allstar team. At the 2008 European Championships he won the election as the most valuable player. In the 2008 Olympics he won the gold medal. A year later, he won the World Cup with France in Croatia. 2007 and 2008 Karabatic was elected in Germany handball player of the year.

In early 2010 he was re-elected as European champion and back center of the room into the All -Star team. France was from 2010 to 2012 so unique in the history of the reigning European champion, world champion and Olympic champion. At the World Cup 2011, he successfully defended the title with the French team. In the summer of 2012, he again won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in London and was re- elected to the All-Star Team. In 2014 he was elected European champion and the most valuable player of the tournament.

Suspected of betting manipulation in 2012

Karabatic was in the betting manipulation that should have occurred in a game of his club Montpellier HB against Rennes Cesson- HB in May 2012 suspected. Besides Karabatic, the injury paused at this game, and his brother Luka more players should have intentionally contributed to the defeat, to allow relatives high winnings of up to 250,000 euros. The affected players threatened because of sports corruption and fraud three to five years in prison and fines of 75,000 euros. Karabatic himself admitted after police interrogation in early October 2012 via his lawyer that he had been involved in stakes, but not a criminal case was at the match-fixing itself on 2 October against him initiated. Karabatic then came on bail and subject to conditions again. Since neither Karabatic people involved still was able to meet members of his club, he was no longer in the squad of Montpellier AHB effect from 3 October 2012. On October 31 Karabatic returned to the squad after the contact ban was lifted. On January 31, 2013 Karabatic released his contract on with Montpellier HB; he moved to Aix -en- Provence. The against Nikola Karabatic imposed by the League LNH in February six- match ban overturned a Court of Appeal of FFHB on March 29, 2013.
