Nikolai Astrup

Nikolai Astrup ( born August 30, 1880 in Bremanger, Norway, † January 21, 1928 in Forde ) was a Norwegian painter. He is one of the largest Norwegian artists of the early 20th century.

Astrup was born in Bremanger, but grew up in Jølster, where his father was a priest. His father wanted Nikolai to be the eldest son also priest, the son was interested in but more for drawing and painting. Astrup took a training in drawing and painting in Oslo and lived for a while in Paris and Germany before returning to Jølster, there married and father of eight children was. Astrup died in 1928, 47 years old, of pneumonia Forde.

In painting Astrup loved clear strong colors and painted most frequently nature particularly in the area of Jølster. Astrup is considered neuro- matic painter. He is also known for his woodcuts.

Several images Astrup were sold for more than four million Norwegian kroner at auctions.
