Nikolai Baturin

Nikolai Baturin (* August 5, 1936 in the village Suislepa, today rural community Tarvastu, Viljandi County, Estonia) is an Estonian writer.

Life and work

Nikolai Baturin visited after school both an Academy of Agriculture as well as a maritime school. Then he went on a warship at sea five years. He then worked for six years for a geological expedition in Siberia.

Nikolai Baturin debuted in 1968 with poems under the title Maa- alused Järved ( " underground rivers "). He writes both in Estonian and in the South-Estonian dialect Mulgi. Baturin, continuing the long tradition of Estonian poetry in the dialect of Southern Estonia. He is a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1973.

Baturins main theme is the relationship between man and nature. In the period of the Soviet Union, he spent fifteen years every summer as a professional hunter in Siberia. His books act as the life of a hunter in the taiga and becoming one with nature. Baturins novel Karu Süda ( "The Heart of the Bear " ) tells of Siberia and the indigenous people of Samoyeds. The book was made ​​into a film in 2001 (directed by Arvo Iho ).
