Nikolaus Hagenauer

Niklas Zimmerlin called Nicholas of Haguenau (also: Niclas Hagenauer, Niklaus Hagenauer, Niclas Hagnower, Niklaus Hagnower, Niclas von Haguenau, Nicolas de Haguenau * to 1445/60; † before 1538) was an Alsatian sculptor of the late Gothic period.

Life and work

Little is known about the life of Niklaus. He was detectable 1493 Strasbourg citizen and had two brothers, Vitus (Guy ) and Paul, who allegedly assisted him in his work. In Strasbourg he created in 1500 his only secure work, the high altar of the cathedral of Strasbourg, of which only remnants remain. In Colmar, the shrine and the sculptures of the middle part of the third face side ( the predella but not ) of the Isenheim altarpiece is attributed to the ( 1500 /05); the paintings of the altar wings were executed by Matthias Grünewald in 1510 /15 campaign. The designs for the altar shrine originate probably from Martin Schongauer (c. 1450-1491 ), demonstrate how different stitches from him.
