Nikolay Bogolyubov

Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogolyubov (Russian Николай Николаевич Боголюбов; * 8.jul / August 21 1909greg in Nizhny Novgorod, .. † 21 March 1992 Moscow) was a Russian theoretical physicist and mathematician.

Life

At fourteen, he took part in a seminar of the Department of Mathematical Physics, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR under the direction of Nikolai Krylov Mitrofanovich. In 1924 he wrote his first scientific work, so that he could start a post graduate course in 1925 without a degree. This he finished in 1928 with a doctorate and was able to habilitation in 1930 at the age of only 21 years. From 1928 to 1973 he worked at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1936 to 1950 he taught as a professor at both the University of Kiev as the Lomonosov University in Moscow. From 1949 worked at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

From 1956 he was also the head of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research ( VIK ) in Dubna, where he occupied the post of Director in 1965. After initial work with purely mathematical problems he devoted himself to problems in theoretical physics. Together with Krylov he dealt with approximate methods of analysis and nonlinear mechanics. Another part of the investigation concerns matters related to a specific area of the modern theory of differential equations and functional analysis. Bogolyubov and Krylov created the so-called theory of invariant measures in dynamical systems. In addition, he scored the fundamental work on quantum statistics ( in the many-body theory ) and the kinetic theory using modern mathematical methods. From 1952 to 1957 he wrote a whole cycle of works on quantum field theory.

Bogolyubov founded a school of nonlinear mechanics, statistical physics and quantum field theory. The outstanding work he found, for example, a rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation and developed the concept of renormalization group and with Parasiuk the strict mathematical foundation of renormalization in quantum field theory ( BPHZ formalism, developed by Klaus Hepp and Wolfhart Zimmermann).

In 1966 he received the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics and 1992, the Dirac Medal ( ICTP ). In 1958 he held with Vasily Sergeyevich Vladimirov a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Edinburgh ( On some mathematical problems of quantum field theory ).
