Nikolay Mladenov

Nikolai Mladenov Eftimow (in English transcription Nikolay Mladenov Eftimov, Bulgarian Николай Евтимов Младенов; born May 5, 1972 in Sofia) is a Bulgarian politician of the GERB party, former Foreign Minister and former Member of the European Parliament.

In 1995 he finished his studies with a specialization in " International Relations " at the Sofia University of National and World Economy with a bachelor's degree. A year later, he completed a master's degree at London's King's College, University of London.

Between 1996 and 1998 Nikolai Mladenov was project manager at the Foundation Open Society Institute in Sofia. He then worked for a short time as a coordinator in the social department of the World Bank in Bulgaria. In 1999 he founded the European Institute in Sofia, whose chairman he remained until 2001.

In the parliamentary elections of 2001, he is the list of the conservative coalition United Democratic Forces (ODS ) elected to the 39 -th Bulgarian Parliament. In Parliament, he is Deputy Chairman of the Committee for European Integration and a member of the Commission for foreign policy, defense and security. On 12 March 2002, he was ( was short SDS, the part of the ODS) elected to the executive of the party Union of Democratic Forces. In the following time Mladenov was party spokesman. On February 22, he was elected Deputy Chairman of the Party SDS. A post he took until August 16, 2005, when he tendered his resignation after the lost elections.

Between 2005 and 2007, Mladenov worked as a consultant for the World Bank, the U.S. International Republican Institute in Bulgaria, Afghanistan, Yemen and other countries in the Middle East. In 2006 he was adviser to the Commission for Defence and the Commission for foreign policy in Iraq's parliament.

In 2007 he was elected as a deputy in the European Parliament for the European People 's Party ( Christian Democrats) and European Democrats from the list of Bulgarian GERB party. In the European Parliament he was a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and the Delegation for relations with Israel, as well as alternates to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Security and Defence and the Delegation for relations with Afghanistan.

After the Bulgarian parliamentary elections in 2009, which was won by the party GERB, Nikolai Mladenov was sworn in on 27 July as Minister of Defence in the government of Boyko Borisov and followed in this office Nikolaj Zonew. Following the resignation of Rumjana Jeleva Mladenov was elected on 27 January 2010 the new Bulgarian Foreign Minister. Successor as defense minister was Anju Angelov. In February 2013, the entire cabinet resigned; the new head of government Marin Rajkow was also Mladenows successor as foreign minister.
