Nikolay Ovcharov

Nikolay Dimitrov Owtscharow ( common transcription Nikolai Dimitrov Ovcharov; Bulgarian Николай Димитров Овчаров; born July 19, 1957 in Veliko Tarnovo ) is a Bulgarian archaeologist and historian

Nikolaj Owtscharow, son of the archaeologist Dimitar Owtscharow studied, to 1976 History and Archaeology at the University of Sofia. He is a staff member at the Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and professor at the International Slavic University in Moscow.

After 2000 Owtscharow became known in connection with important archaeological finds, which is why it is also called "Indiana Jones " in Bulgaria. He was a member of the team that has exposed the southern parts of Tsar Simeon I in the Palace of Veliki Preslav. Professor Owtscharow led the scientific research from which found the Episcopal golden robes and the medieval monastery of Sveti Joan prodrome (St. Johanes Prodromos ) were studied in Kardzhali. Above all, Owtscharow has made a name in the Eastern Rhodopes by his excavations and exposing the rock city of Perperikon and the Orpheus sanctuary near the village of Tatul. Next Owtscharow took part in expeditions in Russia, Greece, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Georgia, Portugal.

In 2009, he turned for the Bulgarian state television the documentary " The Medieval fortresses in the Eastern Rhodopes " ( Bulg Средновековните крепости на Източните Родопи ).

Nikolaj Owtscharow authored 220 scientific publications, including 22 monographs and books. He regularly publishes articles in Bulgarian and foreign magazines, including National Geographic. Some of his works are:
