Nikolay Sokolov (composer)

Nicolai Sokolov (Russian: Николай Александрович Соколов; * 14 Märzjul / March 26 1859greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † March 27 1922 in Petrograd ) was a Russian composer and university teacher.

Sokolov studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov and Julius Johannsen. From 1886 until the October Revolution he taught at the St. Petersburg court orchestra from 1896 also at the Conservatoire, where he became a professor in 1908. Among his pupils were, for example, Dmitri Shostakovich and Ivan Wyschnegradsky.

Sokolow has composed two ballets by Hans Christian Andersen, incidental music, chamber music ( including three string quartets ), songs and sacred music. Sokolow belonged to the circle around the publisher and patron Belyayev and also contributed compositions to the quartet evenings at Les Vendredis. He was also the author of several music theory textbooks.
