Nikolay Zinin

Nikolai Nikolaevich Zinin (Russian Николай Николаевич Зинин, scientific transliteration Nikolay Nikolayevich Zinin; * 13 Augustjul / August 25 1812greg in Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh, .. .. † 6 Februarjul / February 18 1880greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian Organic Chemist.

Life

Zinin studied at the Kazan State University and earned a degree in mathematics there. From 1835 he lectured on in chemistry. To expand his knowledge, he traveled through Europe 1838-1841. He studied, among others, at the University of Giessen in Justus von Liebig. There he completed his research from the field of benzoin addition, the Liebig and Friedrich Wöhler had some years previously discovered in studies of bitter almond oil. After his return, he presented his findings at the University of Saint Petersburg and was awarded his doctorate degree. In the same year he was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of Kazan. In 1842, he played an important role in the accurate determination of aniline, which he described as Benzidam. In 1847 he returned to Saint Petersburg and was admitted to the local Academy of Sciences.

During this time, the young Alfred Nobel was one of his students. Zinin promoted Alexander Borodin Porfirjewitsch.
