Nikopol (Ukraine)

Nikopol (Ukrainian Нікополь; Russian Никополь ) is a city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in southern Ukraine. Nikopol is the center of Rajons same and has about 120,000 inhabitants ( 2012). History

A Cossack settlement Nikitino received city rights in 1782 and was renamed in Nikopol. In Nikopol is the grave of the Cossack Ataman Ivan Sirko. Since the end of the 19th century, Nikopol developed into an important industrial center.

During World War II Nikopol was occupied on August 17, 1941 after the attack on the Soviet Union by the German Wehrmacht.
