Nils Karlsson

Nils Emanuel Karlsson ( born June 25, 1917 in Mora, † 16 June 2012) was a Swedish cross-country skier.

Career

He was at the 1948 Olympic Games in St. Moritz Olympic champion in the 50 km, was about the same distance 1948 world champion and won again at the Nordic World Ski Championships 1950 in Lake Placid the bronze medal over 50 km. He also won the Holmenkollen FIS World Cup Nordic ( Holmenkollen Ski Festival) in 1947 and 1951.

Nils Karlsson was also " Mora - Nisse " named after his home town of Mora, where he grew up. Mora, the city on Lake Siljan in central Sweden, is also the destination of the annual world famous Wasalaufes. Nils Karlsson won the Vasaloppet total of nine times (1943, 1945-1951 and 1953), seven times in a row, making record winner. In 1944 he was honored for the first two-three in a Swedish Championship with the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal - 1952 as the first Swedish cross-country skier with the Holmenkollen medal. He won the Swedish championship, a total of 37 times, including 17 times in individual disciplines. After ending his playing career Nils Karlsson 17 years worked in the organization of Wasalaufes as Deutsche Bahn CEO and chairman.

Mora - Nisse took in his career participated in 256 ski races, of which he finished only ten with a worse outcome than the sixth.

In his honor, was set up on his 65th birthday the Mora - Nisse jubilee fund. The Fund supports Swedish Skijunioren at the age of 17-20 years.

Trivia

His last victory at the Vasaloppet in 1953 in the record time of 5 h 1 min 55 s he put up with wooden skis.
