Nils Muižnieks

Nils Muižnieks Raymond ( born January 31, 1964 in Los Angeles, California) is a Latvian scientists and politicians. He was elected on 24 January 2012 as the third Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and follows Thomas Hammarberg. He exercises this office since April 1, 2012.

Education and Career

Muižnieks studied political science at the universities of Princeton and Berkeley. His doctoral thesis in 1993 was entitled The Baltic popular movements and the disintegration of the Soviet Union. From 1994 to 2002 he was Director of the Latvian Centre for Human Rights and Ethnic Studies.

Muižnieks held from 2002 to 2004 the office of the Latvian integration minister and was a member of the government. In 2004 he was a candidate for the Christian Democrat liberal conservative Latvijas Pirma Partija and on the electoral list of the European Parliament.

The politician is also director of the Advanced Social and Political Research Institute ( ASPRI ) at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Latvia in Riga.

He was also a former Director of the Latvian Centre for Human Rights.

Family

Muižnieks ' parents left Latvia as refugees in 1944 and settled in 1950 in the USA over. He is married and has two daughters.
