Genesis

Paisiello Nina wrote on behalf of King Ferdinand of Sicily. The text is based on a French original. You want a true story underlie that Laurence Sterne should also have used for the character of Maria de Moulines Tristam Shandy in. The opera was originally only one-act. In 1790 Paisiello led to a revised two-act version, with a third version, which was performed in 1793, Paisiello replaced the spoken dialogue by - may not be written by himself - recitatives.

Nina was one of the greatest operatic successes of its time and was performed until the 19th century almost all Italian theaters. The title character was a signature role for famous singers like Isabella Colbran and Giuditta Pasta.

Importance

Paisiello's early contemporaries praised the elegance, simplicity and beauty of the music. The opera is poor in action - the duel between Lindoro and his rival is already taking place before the start of the opera - so that the music is in the foreground. Nina is in the tradition of sentimental, larmoyanter buffa operas such as La buona Piccinis figliuola, in no longer the comic, but the Soulful is emphasized. At the same time the character of Nina forerunner of many heroines in Italian operas of the 19th century such as Lucia di Lammermoor Gaetano Donizetti 's opera is in.

Many parts of the music are influenced by the movable, plastic and witty style of the Neapolitan opera buffa, but especially the pathetic, elegiac and elegant games Ninas reveal a new taste.

A special feature is the song of the shepherd, which is accompanied by a kind of bagpipe.
