Ninian Smart

Roderick Ninian Smart ( born May 6, 1927 in Cambridge, † January 27, 2001 in Lancaster ( Lancashire ) ) was a British scholar of comparative religion and religious historian.

Life

Ninian Smart was born in 1927 as the child of Scottish parents in Cambridge, England.

He went to the University of Glasgow and the Queens ' College, Cambridge. This was followed by positions at Yale University, University of London, Banaras Hindu University and the University of Birmingham.

Smart was 1967-1982 Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Lancaster ( England) and 1976 to 1998 at the University of California.

Ninian Smart, died unexpectedly in January 2001, just days after he had moved from Santa Barbara back to Lancaster.

Smarts World Philosophies work was published in 2002 in German translation ( history of thought). It is a guide through the philosophies of the world, which he was not aware of living contemporaries, but only "finalized philosophers ". Here aware he is beyond the scope of Western philosophy and also the philosophies of South Asia, China, Korea, Japan, Islam, Judaism, Latin America and Africa from the beginnings to modern times dar.
