Ninigo Islands

The Ninigo Islands ( German: Checkerboard Islands) are a group of atolls in the Western Islands of the Bismarck Archipelago. Administratively, include the atolls of the province of Manus in Papua New Guinea.

Geography

The archipelago is located about 1000 km north-east of Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby and 255 km north- west of the provincial capital of Manus. The group consists of the three major atolls:

  • Ninigo, about 34 km long and 18 km wide, with the main island time, and about 30 smaller Motus ( including four inhabited: Pihon, Amik, time, Lau );
  • Pelleluhu, about 9 km long and 8 km wide, with the main island and 13 other Pelleluhu Motus;
  • Heina, about 5 km north-east of Pelleluhu located, consisting of 6 Motus;

And the 5 smaller atolls:

  • Liot, Sama, Sumusama, Awin and Manu
