Niosome

Niosomes ( non -ionic surfactants) have the similar liposomes microscopically small spheres, in which a double-membrane encloses an interior space. In this interior pharmaceuticals or chemical substances can be incorporated. They play an important role in the research, as lipophilic substances can be used in an aqueous medium in a cell culture using the niosomes.

History

Niosomes are first mentioned in the 1970s and were first used in the cosmetic industry.

Differences to liposomes

Niosomes are constructed analogously to the liposomes. However, there liposomes composed of phospholipid bilayers, whereas niosomes are made up of other molecules. These molecules are, for example derived from a variety of sugars or amino acids.
