Nippon Kaiji Kyokai

The Nippon Kaiji Kyōkai (Japanese财 団 法人 日本 海事 协会, Nippon Kaiji Zaidan Hojin Kyōkai, dt " legal capacity Foundation Japanese Navy Company", abbreviated as ClassNK or NK ), headquartered in Tokyo, is a worldwide operating classification society.

The Company which was founded in November 1899 Teikoku Kaiji Kyōkai (about: " Imperial Marine Company ", abbreviated TKK) back, which was concerned with issues of development and regulation of shipbuilding and shipping in Japan. The Company prepared in the first years of existence, first the basics of ship classification prior to finally classify 1920 the first ship, the Kwanan Maru. Six years later became NS with the class character * registered with the Institute of London Underwriters, TKK. In the period between the wars, the TKK cooperated with the British Corporation Register of Shipping and other international registers, reaching in 1929 the first time a classified capacity of one million gross register tons. In 1997, we recorded 100 million tons gross tonnage and 2008 about 7,000 ships were reported with 160 million tons.

After the end of World War II, the class was renamed in 1946 as Nippon Kaiji Kyōkai. There followed years of strong growth, according to the offices in London and New York, 1962 opening of the 70 tour offices and 1966 led to the achievement of a stock of ten million gross tons. 1968 was one of the Japanese classification society of the founding members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS ).

Today the work of ClassNK far beyond the exclusively visit activity and classification of ships and offshore structures reaches out and covers related areas such as technical and organizational quality monitoring, research, training, Damage surveys, and others.
