Nishi-ku (Saitama)

Nishi -ku (Japanese西区, dt "West District " ) is a municipality ( ku ) of the Japanese city of Saitama. Nishi is located on the Arakawa river in the vicinity of Tokyo.

History

As an independent city with over 450,000 inhabitants Ōmiya was (大 宫 市, -shi) until 2001, the administrative center of Saitama Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan. On 1 May 2001 Ōmiya as a city ( shi) was dissolved and merged with Urawa, Yono and Iwatsuki the new prefectural capital Saitama, in the former city Ōmiya forms the northern districts Ōmiya, Kita, Nishi and Minuma.
