Nissan MID4

The Nissan MID4 is a built in two stages of evolution concept car of the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan. It is equipped with a mid-engine and four-wheel drive and served especially as a technology platform for new developments in the sports car segment. The built- in MID4 techniques were eventually used in some production models such as the 300ZX or the skyline.

Nissan MID4

The MID4 debuted in September 1985 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Nissan wanted to present so that the world public, which was reached by the Group's own technologies. When driving a revised 3.0-liter V -6 engine was installed, which originally came from the Z31 300ZX. In contrast to the production version of the engine in MID4 had a DOHC valve train with four overhead camshafts and 24 valves, so that the power was raised to 230 hp. The engine got the registration VG30DE and went in 1986 available only in Japan 300ZR, a variant of the Z31 in production.

But the MID4 waited on with other new features, for example, the first version of the ATTESA all-wheel drive system (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All - Terrain), which was later installed in the models Skyline, Bluebird, Cefiro and a few others. For a balanced performance of all-wheel drive concept car with a torque distribution of 33 % was matched to the front and 67 % on the rear axle. The first step in the evolution of Nissan's all-wheel steering HICAS (High Capacity Actively Controlled Suspension) is built into the MID4, in revised form found its way into the 300ZX Z32 and other performance vehicles of the group later. Was completed, the study by the aerodynamically optimized body, from were incorporated some design elements in the facelifted 300ZX Z31.

Nissan MID4 II

In October 1987, a new concept vehicle was introduced as a direct sequel to the first MID4 at the Tokyo Motor Show. The MID4 II resorted to the methods of construction of its predecessor, but offered a more refined design and a 330 -hp V6 engine with twin turbocharging, the engine capacity of 3.0 liters, however, remained unchanged. This engine was called VG30DETT and came in 1989 with reduced performance in the second generation 300ZX on the market. The complex ATTESA all-wheel drive system was refined together with the Austrian manufacturer Steyr Daimler Puch and the four-wheel - steering HICAS was also reinstalled.
