Nissequogue is a village on the north shore of Long Iceland in the U.S. state of New York. It has the status of an incorporated village and is one of Smithtown in Suffolk County. According to the Census of 2000, the village had 1,543 inhabitants.

Geography

Nissequogue has an area of 10.3 km ², of which 9.8 km ² land and 0.5 km ² water surface. It occupies the area of a peninsula in the Long - Iceland - Sund belonging Smithtown Bay, which is east of the Bay Stony Brook Harbor and west bounded by the mouth of the Nissequogue River. It borders south to St. James and the main town of Smithtown where the other banks are located east Stony Brook and Head of the Harbor Kings Park and west.

The eastern tip of the peninsula runs into an elongated dune area of, called Long Beach, the westernmost tip called Short Beach. Both are part of nature reserves. The Nissequogue River State Park is not, however, in the field of Nissequogue, but on the other bank in Kings Park.

The village is rather thin and built with homes, with many forest areas between the houses.

History

The first European settlement in the area Towns Smith was born in 1665 in what is now Nissequogue, the first church was built in 1675. The incorporation was 1926.

Culture and sights

There is a golf course in Nissequogue, next to the beaches and nature parks are tourist destinations.

Infrastructure

Nissequogue only has smaller local roads and not have their own connections to rail or bus lines.
