Nita Lowey

Nita Lowey Melnikoff ( born July 5, 1937 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and, since 1989, member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the state of New York.

Biography

Lowey was born in the Bronx, New York. With a bachelor, she graduated from Mount Holyoke College. She has worked as a government employee before she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

In 1988, she was first elected to the 20th Congressional District in the House of Representatives. It followed Joseph J. DioGuardi against which they could prevail. Since 1993 she is the successor of José Serrano, who represents the 16th district since then, the representative of the 18th district of New York. The district includes parts of Westchester and Rockland County. She could defend her seat in all subsequent elections. Lowey is a member of the Committee on Appropriations.

Nita Lowey is married to Stephen for over 40 years. Both have 3 children and 8 grandchildren. They live in Harrison, Westchester County. Lowey is Jewish.
