Nitin Sawhney

Nitin Sawhney ( born 1964 in Rochester / Kent, England ) is a British musician of Indian origin as well as composer, DJ, producer and remixer.

Life

The childhood in Rochester, a stronghold of the British National Front was marked by hostility and exclusion. As he learned instruments - piano, concert and flamenco guitar, sitar and tabla - he eluded those horrors so far as it went. A law degree from the University of Liverpool, he broke off. Nevertheless, he took something with Wegbereitendes from this period, namely first band experience in the James Taylor Quartet. He then formed his own band The Jazz Tones and then with the tabla player Talvin Singh and producers, the second, the Tihai trio.

In 1986 he began training as an accountant in Maidstone, the county town of Kent, but just could not bring his musical sidelines in line. In 1988 he moved to London, where he stayed first with odd jobs. The encounter with the actor Sanjeer Bhaskar led to the joint development and embodiment of the comedy duo "The Secret Asians ," which the BBC took to the radio program, which in turn emerged a BBC television series.

In 1993 he started his multi-faceted solo career, not least enabled him also received awards due to be involved in other areas, such as patron of film festivals, as a writer or as a university lecturer.

Music

His music combines Asian sounds with musical influences from around the world and moves between jazz, soul and electronic music. He collaborates with various singers such as Natacha Atlas, Nina Miranda (formerly Smoke City ), Rheena Bhardwaj, Tina Grace. The issues that he processed in his songs, act of multiculturalism, spirituality and politics (including the Indian nuclear tests ). He wrote tunes for several commercials (including Nike and Sephora ), set to music several television documentaries and is responsible for the soundtrack to Mira Nair's film " The Namesake ", the Playstation 3 game Heavenly Sword and the video game Enslaved: responsible Odyssey to the West.

His affinity for computer games can be found in the album title Philtre from 2005 again, because he called in adventure games the " elixir of life ". To collect sequences for his 2001 album release Prophesy, he traveled for four months several continents. Even an interview with Nelson Mandela he utilized. On the 2008 album release London Undersound it came to collaborations with other musicians: the songs October Daze and transmission are a (renewed) cooperation with Tina Grace ( song ), the song My Soul with former Beatle Paul McCartney and the decoupled Distant Dreams with Roxanne Tataei.
