Nkongsamba is a city in southwestern Cameroon about 145 kilometers north of Douala. It is the administrative seat of the district Moungo.

Geography

Nkongsamba is located on the foothills of the highlands of Adamawa, at about 830 m above sea level. It is situated on seven hills between ancient volcanic craters, the 2411 m high Manengoubamassiv in the west and 1825 m high Nlonako in the east. In the fertile soil of this region pepper, cocoa, coffee, bananas and pineapples are grown.

History

The city is 1912 emerged as Samba with the construction of the railway line known as Manegubahn Bonabéri - Nkongsamba under German administration. The planned extension of the route north to Bafoussam, Foumban, Banyo and Garoua was never realized. The south was expanded with the crossing of the river Wouri to Douala and is now known as the Northern Railway. However, transport is now set by Nkongsamba to Mbanga. Only the West route between Douala and Mbanga and on to Kumba is traversed regularly. During the German colonial period, telecommunications with the construction of a telegraph Institute finds its way into Nkongsamba. 1914 telephone double lines of the German postal along the northern railway were laid up after Nkongsamba. With the beginning of the First World War the city was occupied by the British and reached 1916 French administration.

Economy and infrastructure

The city is the center of a coffee and banana growing region. Include inter alia sawmills, breweries and palm oil processing to businesses. In addition, a teacher training college, technical schools and a research institute for cocoa cultivation exists.

Traffic

Nkongsamba is located on the well-developed road N5 linking Douala to Bafoussam. Rail traffic on the railway line to Douala on the Atlantic Ocean is set.
