Noachis Terra

Noachis Terra is a sprawling, cratered highland region on the planet Mars. Its center is located at 45 ° North and 10 ° East. The region covers about 4800 km between the giant impact basins Argyre Planitia Hellas Planitia in the West and in the East. It was named in 1979 after Noah, the biblical builder of the ark.

Noachis Terra is one of the oldest geological formations on Mars and was 3.8 to 3.5 billion years ago, during the Noachian period named after it formed. At this time, the surface of the planet still a heavy bombardment of asteroids and comets has been exposed.

The entire region is dotted with impact craters. The greatest (Greene, Darwin, Lohse, Kaiser, Proctor ) have diameters between 100 and 200 kilometers.
