Noarootsi Parish

Noarootsi (Swedish and German: Nuckö ) is a rural municipality in the Estonian Lääne with an area of 296 km ². It has 981 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2008).

Noarootsi is located directly on the Baltic Sea in the western part of the county. The area was inhabited since the mid-13th century the majority of Estonian Swedes who lived mainly from fishing. Most Swedish-speaking inhabitants were resettled 1943/44, shortly before the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union to Sweden.

Since 1997, the place names are again two languages ​​specified in Estonian and Swedish. The administrative headquarters is located in Pürksi ( Birka ).
