Megalithic grave Riesenberg

Nobbin (also megalithic grave Riesenberg called ) best known for the giant mountain called megalithic grave. Built out of megalithic boulders derived from the Neolithic period of Ruegen. It is one of the largest megalithic tombs in northern Germany and is situated just meters from the cliff Tromper Wiek, right on the cliff top path (54 ° 39 '11 "N, 13 ° 23' 36 " O54.65305555555613.393333333333 ).

It is a trapezoid- shaped barrow with grave chamber (extended dolmen ). The grave chamber was disturbed in recent times (1933 and 1970).

The trapezoidal enclosure system from formerly 53 large kerbstones is 34 m long and 11 to 8 feet wide ( 39 stones are preserved). In the northeast, two transverse dolmens, only one of which is well preserved were. It is 1.4 m high, 1.8 m long and 1.1 m wide. On the south side, two stand set in front of the skirt guard stones more than three feet up, as they are otherwise quite typical for Scandinavian dolmen, but occur in a similar dimension even when Großdolmen of Dwasieden and Dummertevitz on Rügen. The equipment with guards stones is rare in Germany and is explained here by the proximity to the Danish islands.

The first excavation took place in 1933 by Prof. Petzsch instead. She brought many discoveries.

Excavations in 1970 by Ewald Schuldt, three crosscutting arrowheads, a sword, some zerscherbte vessels and a few bone fragments (including two skull) be salvaged as Neolithic finds. In the northern chamber grave the remains of a burial urn dating from the 5th century BC have been found. Between the guardian stones were pottery shards from the Slavic period and an Arab silver coin from the 9th century to the fore. This shows that the giant mountain over thousands of years for the Islanders was significant.
