Noble County (Indiana)

Noble County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Albion.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme northeast of Indiana, is in the north about 40 miles from Michigan to the east approximately 45 miles from Ohio and has an area of 1082 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: LaGrange County, Steuben County, DeKalb County, Allen County, Whitley County, Kosciusko County and Elkhart County.

History

Noble County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of Allen County, Elkhart County and LaGrange County. It was named after James Noble, the first U.S. Senator from Indiana.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Noble County 46 275 people in 16,696 households and 12,288 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.98 percent White, 0.41 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 4.04 percent from other races groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.13 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 16,696 households out of which 37.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 26.4 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent of all households and 8.6 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.19 persons.

29.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 to 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44 years. 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 99.7 males.

The median income for a household was 42,700 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family $ 49,037. Males have a median income of $ 35,124, women $ 24,026. The per capita income was $ 17,896. 5.6 percent of families and 7.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
