Noci

Noci is an Italian town with 19 439 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Bari, in Puglia.

Location and data

Noci is situated 51 km south-west of Bari. The neighboring municipalities are Alberobello, Castellana Grotte, Gioia del Colle, Mottola (TA) and Putignano. The town is a center of the cattle ranching. Other important branches of agriculture are the production of cheese and sausage. The location of tourism is becoming increasingly important.

History

Traces of people have already been found in the area of Noci in prehistory. There parts of a prehistoric settlement have been found. The town of Noci goes back in origin to the 6th century. The name comes from the city's nut orchards in the area.

Attractions

The Chiesa di Abbaziale Barsento comes in origin dating from the 6th century. The parish church dates from the 14th century and has a Gothic - Romanesque facade. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Croce dates from the 15th century, the interior frescoes of the Virgin can be seen. The Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria della Scala offers an abbey church from the 12th century and active monastic life and the maintenance of Gregorian chant.
