Noel Redding

Noel Redding ( born December 25, 1945 in Folkestone, † 11 May 2003 in Clonakilty, Ireland ) was a British guitarist and bassist.

Career

Redding was in the early 60s, guitarist of the British band Neil Landon and the Burnettes. He became famous, however, primarily as bassist for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Jimi Hendrix In 1966 together with him and drummer Mitch Mitchell. Noel answered an ad in Melody Maker, in the Eric Burdon new guitarist for his new band The Animals was looking for. Chas Chandler asked him during this session if he Bass " with this guy because " - could play - Hendrix. Noel had never played bass, but Jimi Hendrix liked his woolly hair, which reminded him of Dylan and Redding was hired. The whole band was created by Chas Chandler. In 1969 the Experience disbanded again.

Redding then founded with Neil Landon and others, the band Fat Mattress, in which he played guitar again. In the 70s he founded the band Noel Redding. Economically He was not particularly good at this time, so that he was forced in 1974, all his rights to the recordings of the Jimi Hendrix Experience to sell for $ 100,000. From the revenue from the re-release of the recordings after the introduction of the CD he saw a penny.

In 1996 he published his autobiography Are you Experienced? in which he reflected on the time with the experience and especially expounded, such as the completely inexperienced in financial and legal matters members of the band by management and lawyers " ripped off " was.

Noel Redding died on 11 May 2003 at the age of 57 years. He was found at his home in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland. Cause of death was a tear of the abdominal aorta by an aneurysm.

Equipment

Noel Redding initially played a Gibson EB -2 to him by the manager of the Experience, Chas Chandler (former bassist with the Animals ) had borrowed, as well as a six-string Fender VI, which should help him as the actual guitarists to switch to the bass. On the advice of John Entwistle he bought in February 1967 a sunburstfarbenen Fender Jazz Bass, which should be with the experience his main instrument during the time and which he sold to a collector for $ 10,000 early eighties. In 1997, Fender brought out a signature model, called " Noel Redding Jazz Bass". On the Hendrix album Axis: Bold As Love Redding also put an 8 -string Hagstrom one.

Redding was plectrum player, this was also due to his background as a guitarist. In the beginning, Redding played mainly Burns amplifier. Marshall amps were of course also missing on any stage. The then-contemporary Plexis suitable for both guitar and bass. So he shared his amp quite well with Jimi Hendrix. From 1968 Redding used very often by Sunn amplifiers.
