Nogaro

The municipality is located in Nogaro in the French Région Midi -Pyrenees in the department of Gers, in 1985 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) and is the capital of the canton of the same name. Through the village leads the GR 65, which largely follows the historical course of the French Road to Santiago Via Podiensis.

Geography

Nogaro is located in the historic region of Armagnac in the heart of Gascony, which is known throughout the world mainly because of the wine produced there Brandes, of Armagnac. The 1985 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) counting small town situated on the River Midouze, a tributary of the Adour. The nearest major town is Mont -de- Marsan, which is in a northwesterly direction over the distance D6 - D30 reached after about 44 kilometers of road. The next major French cities are Toulouse (120 km ) to the east and Bordeaux ( 128 km) to the northwest.

History

Nogaro was founded in 1055 by the Archbishop of Auch Austinde. He created this so-called Zone of Peace (French Sauveté ) to an undisturbed trade at the crossroads of ancient trade routes that led from Auch to Toulouse or Bayonne and of Eauze. The pervading traders had to pay toll, which the pilgrims were exempted. 1104 built Graf Bernhard III. a hospice for lepers. In the religious wars of the site by Protestant troops, under the leadership of Count Montgomery, was largely destroyed, and the church of Saint Nicolas has been greatly affected. In 1607 the county of Armagnac as the entire Gascogne fell to the French crown under Henri IV Nogaro was royal city, which it remained until 1642. Between 1790 to 1795 Nogaro was the district capital.

The way is now approaching the river landscape of the Adour River with its intense agricultural use. This maize is mainly grown here. After Nogaro it goes through oak and chestnut forests. The Gers region is now derelict and south of the Adour the department begins country. The next major point of the Camino is Barcelonne -du -Gers before immediately Aire -sur -l'Adour is achieved. The GR 65 leads to Barcelonne -du -Gers past right after Aire -sur -l'Adour. As a road connecting the D931 leads to Barcelonne -du- Gers. Prior to that, there are other places to stay in Arblade -le-Haut and Lanne- Soubiran.

Attractions

  • The construction of the Romanesque collegiate church of Saint -Nicolas was started in 1055. It was heavily damaged in the wars of religion and partly renovated in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, it presents itself as a three-nave building with a semicircular apse, the side chapels are designed as barrel vaults.
