Nogent (Haute-Marne)

Nogent is a French town with 3953 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute -Marne, in the Champagne -Ardenne region. It is located in Chaumont district and is the principal town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Nogent. The inhabitants are called Nogentaises.

During the French Revolution the name of the municipality of Nogent -le- Roi was ( previously Nogent -Haute- Marne), 1890, the name in Nogent -en- Bassigny was changed. Since 1972, the church is called only Nogent.

Geography

The city is situated on a plateau overlooking the valley of traire, a tributary of the Marne, about 17.5 kilometers southeast of Chaumont.

History

The megaliths ( dolmens ) are testimony to the early importance of the area. Through the village led the trade route between Langres and Trier.
