Nógrád County

Nógrád [no ː ɡra ː d] ( German: Neuburg, Slovak Novohrad ) is a county (administrative district ) in Northern Hungary. It shares borders with Slovakia and the counties Pest, Heves and Borsod -Abaúj -Zemplén. It has an area of ​​2544 km ² and (2001) 221 642 inhabitants. The county seat is Salgótarján.

The name is of Slavic origin Nógrád. It is due to the Slavic Novigrad ( degree of Novi ), which in German means " Neuburg " or "New Town", in Hungarian Újvár. History and Culture

The county went from the same county ( in German often Neograd / Neuburg called ) after the collapse of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1918 and was produced at that time united with the Hungarian part of the Hont county to Nógrád - Hont. After the cession of southern Slovakia as a result of the first Vienna Award 1939, the Slovak since 1918 part of the county was reconnected to the Hungarian part until 1945.
