Nomenclator (nomenclature)

Nomenclator (Latin, formed from nomen = name and clator = regression of the verb clamare = cry, so therefore " name denominator " ) is either a servant, a freedman or a slave who is in the service of a wealthy Roman patrician and which has the task, the name and appearance of all clients to remember that will make the patron to pay their respects. He then helps his master at receptions, banquets and even in public, by accompanying him even for outputs on the street. When meeting with a client, he must call his master 's name, so that the patron can respond and greet his clients polite and courteous. Without this attention to pass by a client, is considered an insult and could cost the patron at the next election votes. The staff knowledge of Nomenclators are thus in big houses that have many clients and who are candidates for offices, particularly important. The Nomenclator also determines the order of the Vortritts of guests, called at a banquet every dish that is applied and its special advantages.
