Non-Disjunction
The term non- disjunction (English: disjunction = separation), even non-disjunction and under the synonym mis-segregation known is understood in genetics, the lack of moving apart of two homologous chromosomes at meiosis I or the non- separation of sister chromatids by a failure of the Metaphase during mitosis or meiosis II
Thus, the resulting daughter cells have either one chromosome too many ( trisomy ) or one chromosome too few ( monosomy ). Non- disjunction is the most common cause of such aneuploidy.
So-called Free trisomies arise due to meiotic non- disjunction, mosaic trisomies arise by mitotic non- disjunction.
