For the actual transport of the books a NVOCC cargo space of a carrier's and sold it further into smaller parts to its customers. Against this Unterverfrachter ( engl. actual carrier) the NVOCC is so charterers.

Reeder without a ship in practice

Most NVOCCs buy for months or years before tonnage quotas of certain shipping companies and then sell them to their customers. Here, the NVOCC has worked as a groupage freight forwarding and usually obtains very good Price reductions in transit and can thereby calculate its prices unlike, for example, a freight forwarder.

The world's largest NVOCC is ECU-LINE, behind the Indian Group Allcargo Logistics hides as the main shareholder, followed by the groupage freight forwarders DHL Global Forwarding and Kuehne Nagel. IAL is the largest NVOCC in the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. In the Eastern Caribbean VHF Cargo Airlines Inc. is the largest NVOCC.
