Pelargonic acid ( nonanoic acid ) is a saturated fat or carboxylic acid derived from the alkane n-nonane. It is a liquid at standard conditions, unpleasant rancid -smelling alkanoic acid. It is sparingly soluble in water but readily soluble in alcohols or ethyl acetate. Its salts or esters hot Pelargonate or Nonanoate. The name derives from the pelargonium, a species of the Geranium Family, from, since it occurs inter alia in their leaves.

Occurrence

Pelargonic occurs in the form of its esters in the leaves of Pelargonium roseum, Ajania, Rubus, and in the hop oil, rose oil and also the human skin. It is a product of the ozonolysis of ω - 9 fatty acids such as oleic acid or erucic acid.

Use

Pelargonic acid is used for the production of lubricants, alkyd resins and plasticizers. It is also used as a herbicide. It is also the active ingredient in some remote support means (eg against rabbit). In addition, hydrotropes from Pelargonic salts can be produced.

In Germany and Switzerland pesticides are approved with the drug Pelargonic in Austria there is no admission.
