Nonnebakken

The remains of the castle were found among the district Nonnebakken and excavated from Funen Museum. The castle was south of the river Odense Å below the later built the convent of Benedictine nuns, gave the site the name Nonnebakken ( nuns hill ). From the hill from the 988 was first mentioned in Odense probably well overlooked. The nuns left the grounds already the end of the 12th century to Dalum further southeast of Odense, now a suburb to build a new monastery.

Further destruction suffered the plant, as at the end of the 19th century, the Lodge of the " Odd Fellows " built here. Today only remembers a street name to the plant.

Excavations and Finds

Although there have been incidents in 1775 and 1889 excavations and finds on the site, the plant was recorded in 1953 in its entire extent. Here, it was found an approximate diameter of 120 m. In 1988, at least a 4 m wide and 2 m deep V-shaped ditch with a maximum of 10-12 m wide berm at Kabelausschachtungen was detected. The filling could be dated to the monastic period. An 8 m wide and 4 m deep V-shaped ditch was excavated in 1992 in the NE and NW in the cut. When rescue excavations in the course of district heating installation, a minimum of 3 m was 1995/97/98 deeper and 11 m wide trench explored. Here, a spade was salvaged oak. This could be a dendrochronological date in the "function of time " of the system. Further investigations in 2002 parts of the monastery were recorded.
