Norbert Peters (engineer)

Norbert Peters ( * July 10, 1942 in Linz) Director of the Institute for Combustion Technology was employed from 1988 until his retirement (since 2005, previously Institute of Engineering Mechanics ) at the RWTH Aachen.

His scientific training gained Peters at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, Berlin University of Technology and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes practique (Paris, France). Prior to serving as Director of the Institute, he served as assistant professor at the Technical University of Berlin (1972-1976) and as a full professor at the RWTH Aachen (1976-1987) worked. Furthermore, Peters worked as a visiting professor at the University of California, San Diego, where he has also an extraordinary professorship since 1996, at the Combustion Research Facility, Sandia Laboratories in Livermore, California, as well as a professor at the Department for Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University.

Peters research focus is in the laminar and turbulent combustion. He became known in this field, in particular through his work on the flamelet model and the systematic development of reduced reaction mechanisms. In addition, he is the author of the reference book Turbulent Combustion.

Awards

Peters received, inter alia, honorary doctorates from the universities of Brussels ( 1994), Darmstadt ( 2002) and the ETH Zurich (2010). He is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering ( acatech) and, since 1999, the North Rhine- Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and Foreign Associate of the U.S. Academy of Engineering.
