Nordfjord

Nordfjord, inner part, against Jostedalsbreen

The Nordfjord is a 106 km long fjord in the north of the Norwegian province (county ) Sogn og Fjordane, about 10 km south of the 62nd parallel. The fjord is up to 565 m deep.

Landscape

On the north side of the northern fjord landscape has a highland region with altitudes of 1,000 m partial to 1,400 m. On its south side, many of the 1,500 m peaks are glaciated. To the east and southeast of its internal end rises Jotunheimen, Norway's highest mountain range with the Jostedalsbreen. A few kilometers north of Nordfjord lies the Hornindalsvatnet, the deepest lake in Europe.

Today's most significant places in the Nordfjord Stryn are on Innvikfjord, Nordfjordeid on Eidsfjord ( Eid means land bridge and the name Eidsfjord there several times), Måløy on Vågsøy on the north side of the mouth and Sandane on Gloppenfjord.

District Nordfjord

Nordfjord is also the name of one of the three districts of Sogn og Fjordane, which goes back to an eponymous old bailiwick. This includes the municipalities Selje, Vågsøy, Bremanger, Eid, Gloppen, Hornindal and Stryn. It has an area of ​​4295 km ² and approximately 32,965 inhabitants.
