Nordhausen (district)

The district of Nordhausen is the northernmost district of Thuringia. Neighboring districts are the two counties in Saxony-Anhalt Harz and Mansfeld- South Harz, south of the Kyffhauserkreis, in the west of County calibration field and in the northwest the Lower Saxon districts Osterode and Goslar in the north and east.

Geography

Location

In the north of the county is bordered by the resin, in the south of the mountain ranges of the extracts, the Hainleite and Windleite. The highest elevation is 634 m above sea level. NN in the Harz Mountains, on the border of Lower Saxony. It is the only district of Thuringia, the share of the resin has.

Waters

History

In the Middle Ages, the region belonged to the county of Hohenstein, Nordhausen itself was from 1220 a free imperial city. By the Peace of Westphalia, the district area fell largely to Prussia. In 1802, Nordhausen lost his imperial city status. 1816 was a circle Nordhausen within the newly formed Prussian province of Saxony. 1888, the circle within a circle County Hohenstein was renamed. Nordhausen was from 1882 to 1945 county-level city. Between 1943 and 1945 there was a concentration camp Dora -Mittelbau near Nordhausen in underground tunnels. District administrators

In the district election on 22 April 2012 There is no candidate was able to unite the absolute majority of votes. Economy and infrastructure

Economy

In the north of the county, tourism is an important economic factor dar. particular, the places Rothesütte, Sophienhof, Neustadt / Harz and Ilfeld play an important role, but they are only a few kilometers from the Brocken, the highest mountain of the Harz, removed.

Traffic

The highest educational institution in the district is the Fachhochschule Nordhausen, founded in 1997.
