Nordic skiing at the 1948 Winter Olympics

The V. 1948 Olympic Games in St. Moritz five competitions were held in Nordic skiing. Venue was the ski stadium and the Olympic ski jump. The cross-country trails led through the territory of Stazerwaldes. In addition to Olympic medals and World Championship medals were awarded at the Nordic disciplines. The only exception was the Nordic combined, where only Olympic medals were awarded.

At the start were 84 runners from 15 countries, one of them gave up the race to go. Was started at intervals of 30 seconds. The run was one also for the combination.

The first reports from the checkpoint at 6 km showed that the Scandinavians already fairly closed were in the lead. In the meantime, at 12 km, the two Swedes Nils Östensson and Martin Lundström were in the lead with over a minute ahead of their competitors. In the second half of the course Gunnar Eriksson pushed in the standings ahead of the Finn Heikki Hasu and so did the Swedish triple victory perfectly. Which was launched as a favorite Nils Karlsson made ​​, however, to create the thin air, he finished the race as a disappointing fifth. As the best means Europeans, the Frenchman Benoît Carrara won the eleventh place, otherwise handed the Nordic supremacy until the 19th Place.

It took 39 athletes from 13 countries participate, one did not finish the race. The winner of the long- run, received 240 points, for all of the following, there were corresponding point deductions. The ski jumping competition was the first time in three attempts, the best of which came two jumps in the standings.
