Nordsøen Oceanarium

The North Sea Oceanarium (Danish Nordsøen Oceanarium ) is a maritime museum in the Danish port of Hirtshals, North Jutland with aquarium and oceanarium and exhibitions across the North Sea and its fauna.

Location

The museum is located directly on the E 39 ( Aalborgvej ) in an industrial area in the east of Hirtshals. A regional train station the route Hirtshals Hjørring can be found 300 meters from the museum.

Attractions

Oceanarium

With over 4.5 million liters of sea water volume and a height over four floors, the Oceanarium, through both its size a natural impression of the North Sea. Inter alia it shows the rare sunfish. After a devastating fire in 2003 the Oceanarium in 2005 was reopened.

Seal enclosure

In an outdoor field you will find the seal enclosure with 8 to 10 seals. It is not captured, but born in the Museum animals or Whistles. The main pool holds almost 1 million liters of sea water. It was built in the 1990s, after the seal enclosure built in 1984 proved to be too small. Through a glass tunnel, it is possible to look at the seals under water.

Aquariums

In the former 1984 built the main building there is a large, 5 meters high aquarium, which is stocked with cod, pollack, turbot and sea bass. To this octagonal aquarium twelve aquaria are arranged each showing different habitats of the North Sea.

Numerous other topics basins, spread over the entire complex (especially in new construction) usually depict animals that are barely visible in the large aquarium.

North Sea Lab

Visitors can view the non-visible to the naked eye creatures of the North Sea by microscopes. Also in the North Sea Lab finds the " petting zoo " where many marine animals can also be palpated.

Playgrounds

On the grounds of the museum playgrounds set for different age groups, including are a fishing boat and a whale erkletterbar.
