Norfloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic from the group of gyrase inhibitors for oral administration. It belongs to the class of fluoroquinolones. The colorless to pale yellow crystalline powder is infinitely soluble soluble in water, ethanol and methanol in acetic acid and in very small quantities.
It shows a high in vitro activity against a wide range of gram positive and gram negative aerobic bacteria.
Norfloxacin is mainly used to treat urinary tract infections and gonorrhea. The main side effects are typical of the substance class of fluoroquinolones. These include nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, dizziness, and neuropsychiatric reactions. Very rarely in all gyrase inhibitors - even after a short exposure - to rupture large tendons, come to Achilles tendon rupture, for example. Note the interaction described in the ciprofloxacin with caffeine. It is definitely forbidden ( contraindicated ) Norfloxacin during pregnancy and lactation should be administered. Norfloxacin must further until the end of the growth period is not administered (except for cystic fibrosis ).
Based on the recommendation of the European Medicines Agency, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices in February 2009, the indications due to unfavorable risk - benefit assessment and insufficiently proven efficacy amended so that norfloxacin - containing medicines not approved for the treatment of complicated pyelonephritis / pyelonephritis are.
