Normal school

The normal school an elementary school was named in the 18th and 19th centuries, which also served as a model of teacher education institution.

History

The term was first used for the model school, the Johann Ignaz Felbiger 1763 einrichtete in Sagan when he reformed the Catholic school system in Silesia on behalf of Frederick the Great. The model of these and other Silesian schools was rapidly taken up in other countries, especially in Catholic territories of the empire, as in Austria from 1771 or in the Duchy of Westphalia by Friedrich Adolf Sauerland since 1795. Influence did the concept for France ( école normal ).

During the first normal school in Sagan was a training facility for primary school teachers who were already at work, most normal schools the training of new teachers served. Their concept was to give the poor qualified teachers, the content and methods of teaching standards (hence the name "Normal School "). During the 19th century, the normal schools were largely replaced by teacher seminars.

Of outstanding importance in Germany, headed by Bernhard Heinrich Overberg Normal School was in Münster.
