Norman Francis McFarland

Norman Francis McFarland ( born February 21, 1922 in Martinez ( CA ), USA, † April 16, 2010 in Orange ( California), USA) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Orange in California.

Life

Norman Francis McFarland, eldest of three sons of a railway worker, was educated at St. Joseph's College in Mountain View and St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park. He was ordained priest on 15 June 1946 and worked as a pastor. He studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC and received his doctorate in canon law. He worked for the diocesan administration in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him in 1970 as Titular Bishop of Bida and Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco. He received his episcopal consecration Archbishop Joseph Thomas McGucken on September 8, 1970. Were co-consecrators the Bishop of Fresno, Hugh Aloysius Donohoe, and the Bishop of Stockton, Merlin Joseph Guilfoyle. His motto was " In veritate ambulare ".

On December 6, 1974, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator in Reno (Nevada ) and Bishop of Reno, from October of the same year of Reno -Las Vegas, appointed on 10 February 1976. McFarland managed to deleverage the highly indebted diocese and to secure financial management is rigid charitable commitment.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on December 29, 1986 Bishop of Orange in California. The inauguration took place on 24 February of the following year. His age-related resignation was accepted on 30 June 1998.

Bishop McFarland was named because of its size (1.95 m) and weight (109 kg) " Big Mac".
